If you’ve ever sat down with a calculator and the TAJ rate sheet trying to figure out exactly how much an employee should take home, you know the pain. PAYE thresholds, NIS ceilings, NHT percentages, Education Tax splits — it’s a lot of numbers to get right, and getting any one of them wrong means your payslip is inaccurate, your filings are incorrect, and your business is exposed to penalties.

That’s why we built the PayrollJamaica free payroll calculator. It takes a gross salary, applies every statutory deduction at the correct 2026 rates, and gives you an instant, accurate payslip breakdown. No account required. No credit card. No sales pitch before you see results.

What the Calculator Does

The PayrollJamaica calculator is a purpose-built tool for Jamaican employers, HR professionals, accountants, and employees who need to understand exactly how statutory deductions work. Here’s what it calculates automatically:

PAYE (Pay As You Earn)

Income tax deducted at source based on the employee’s gross earnings and the current tax-free threshold. The calculator applies the correct annual threshold of J$1,902,360 (J$158,530 per month), then calculates tax at the appropriate marginal rates — 25% on the first J$6,000,000 of taxable income and 30% above that. It handles the monthly proration automatically, so you don’t need to divide annual figures manually.

NIS (National Insurance Scheme)

Both the employee and employer NIS contributions at 3% each, correctly capped at the annual earnings ceiling of J$5,000,000. The calculator shows you both sides of the contribution so you can see the true cost of employment, not just the employee deduction.

NHT (National Housing Trust)

Employee contributions at 2% and employer contributions at 3% of gross earnings. Unlike NIS, NHT has no earnings ceiling — it applies to the full gross salary. The calculator applies this correctly, which is a common source of error in manual payroll calculations.

Education Tax

The most frequently miscalculated deduction in Jamaican payroll. Employee rate: 2.25%. Employer rate: 3.5%. There is no threshold exemption for Education Tax — it applies from the very first dollar of income. The calculator handles both rates separately and shows you the correct amounts for each.

Net Take-Home Pay

After all statutory deductions are applied, the calculator shows the employee’s net pay — the actual amount that hits their bank account. It also shows the total employer cost, which includes the employer’s share of NIS, NHT, and Education Tax on top of the gross salary.

All the 2026 Statutory Rates in One Place

Before we walk through an example, here’s a complete reference table of every statutory rate the calculator uses. Bookmark this page — you’ll come back to it.

  • Rate on taxable income above J$6,000,000: 30%

NIS Rates

  • Employee rate: 3%
  • Employer rate: 3%
  • Annual earnings ceiling: J$5,000,000 (J$416,667/month)

NHT Rates

  • Employee rate: 2%
  • Employer rate: 3%
  • Earnings ceiling: None — applies to full gross salary

Education Tax Rates

  • Employee rate: 2.25%
  • Employer rate: 3.5%
  • Threshold: None — applies from the first dollar of income

Example Calculation: J$200,000/Month Gross Salary

Let’s walk through a complete payroll calculation for an employee earning J$200,000 per month gross. This is a common salary level for mid-level professionals in Jamaica, and it demonstrates how every deduction works.

Step 1: Calculate PAYE

The monthly tax-free threshold is J$158,530. Our employee earns J$200,000, so the taxable income is:

J$200,000 - J$158,530 = J$41,470 taxable

At the 25% rate (since this is well below the J$6M annual upper band):

PAYE = J$41,470 x 25% = J$10,367.50

Step 2: Calculate NIS (Employee Portion)

NIS is 3% of gross earnings, capped at the monthly ceiling of J$416,667. Our employee earns J$200,000, which is below the ceiling, so:

NIS (employee) = J$200,000 x 3% = J$6,000

Step 3: Calculate NHT (Employee Portion)

NHT is 2% of gross earnings with no ceiling:

NHT (employee) = J$200,000 x 2% = J$4,000

Step 4: Calculate Education Tax (Employee Portion)

Education Tax for the employee is 2.25% on statutory income (gross minus NIS), no threshold:

Education Tax (employee) = J$200,000 x 2.25% = J$4,500

Step 5: Calculate Net Take-Home Pay

Now subtract all employee deductions from the gross salary:

  • Gross salary: J$200,000
  • Less PAYE: J$10,367.50
  • Less NIS: J$6,000
  • Less NHT: J$4,000
  • Less Education Tax: J$4,500
  • Net take-home pay: J$175,132.50

The employee takes home 87.6% of their gross salary after all statutory deductions.

Step 6: Calculate Total Employer Cost

The employer also has statutory obligations on top of the gross salary:

  • Gross salary: J$200,000
  • Plus NIS (employer 3%): J$6,000
  • Plus NHT (employer 3%): J$6,000
  • Plus Education Tax (employer 3.5%): J$7,000
  • Total employer cost: J$219,000

So an employee who earns J$200,000 gross actually costs the employer J$219,000 per month when you include the employer’s share of statutory contributions. That’s a 9.5% premium on top of the gross salary — a figure every business owner needs to factor into their budgets.

Who Uses the Calculator

Our free Jamaica payroll calculator serves several different audiences, each with their own use case:

Business Owners and HR Managers

Use the calculator to verify your current payroll deductions are correct. If you’re using a manual system or spreadsheets, run a few of your employees through the calculator and compare the results. Any discrepancy means your current system has an error — and that error is costing you money in penalties or overpayments.

Accountants and Bookkeepers

The calculator is a quick reference tool for client consultations. When a client asks how much an employee will actually cost them, you can show them the full breakdown in seconds, including the employer’s statutory obligations that many business owners overlook.

Job Seekers and Employees

If you’ve received a job offer with a gross salary figure, the calculator tells you exactly what you’ll take home after deductions. No more guessing, no more surprises on your first payslip. Understanding the difference between gross and net pay in Jamaica is essential for making informed career decisions.

Entrepreneurs Planning Their First Hire

Making your first hire in Jamaica is exciting — and expensive if you don’t budget correctly. The calculator shows you the true cost of employment, including the employer contributions that aren’t part of the employee’s gross salary but absolutely are part of your cost. Use it to plan your hiring budget before you make an offer.

Common Payroll Calculation Mistakes the Calculator Prevents

We built this calculator because we kept seeing the same errors in Jamaican payroll calculations. Here are the most common mistakes and how the calculator eliminates them:

Applying PAYE to the Full Gross Salary

The most expensive mistake employers make is forgetting to deduct the tax-free threshold before calculating PAYE. On a J$200,000/month salary, applying 25% to the full amount gives you J$50,000 in PAYE — instead of the correct J$10,367.50. That’s nearly J$40,000 per month being over-deducted from the employee’s pay. Multiply that by 12 months and 20 employees, and you’ve got a serious problem.

Using the Same Rate for Employee and Employer Education Tax

Education Tax has different rates for employees (2.25%) and employers (3.5%). We frequently see payroll systems that apply 2.25% to both or 3.5% to both. Either error creates a compliance gap that TAJ will catch — and penalize.

Ignoring the NIS Ceiling

NIS contributions are capped at an annual earnings ceiling of J$5,000,000 (J$416,667/month). For employees earning above this amount, NIS should only be calculated on J$416,667, not the full salary. Missing this cap means over-deducting from high earners — money that’s difficult to recover once remitted to the NIS.

Applying a Threshold to Education Tax

Unlike PAYE, Education Tax has no threshold exemption. It applies to the full gross salary from the first dollar. Employers who assume the PAYE threshold applies to Education Tax are undercharging — and building up an arrears liability they may not discover until audit time.

Forgetting Employer Contributions in Budget Calculations

Employers contribute 3% NIS, 3% NHT, and 3.5% Education Tax on top of every employee’s gross salary. That’s an additional 9.5% that doesn’t appear on the employee’s payslip but absolutely appears on the employer’s bank statement. Failing to budget for this is the number one cash flow surprise for new Jamaican employers.

From Calculator to Full Payroll — The Natural Next Step

The calculator gives you accurate numbers for a single employee at a single point in time. But running payroll for a real business means doing this calculation for every employee, every pay period, while also tracking:

  • Year-to-date totals for each statutory deduction
  • NIS ceiling tracking — knowing when an employee has hit the annual cap
  • Mid-period changes — raises, new hires, terminations, and their prorated effects
  • Leave and overtime — statutory holiday pay, sick leave, and overtime premiums
  • Bank file generation — payment files for NCB, JN Bank, Scotiabank, and Sagicor
  • TAJ reporting — monthly returns and annual SO1 in the format TAJ requires

That’s where PayrollJamaica’s full payroll platform comes in. Everything the calculator does, applied automatically to your entire workforce, with reporting, bank integration, and compliance tracking built in.
